Sellers of spray tanning equipment make the marketing claim that a spray tan can be done in two minutes with an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray tan system, the dominant choice in spray tan equipment today. That’s a bit rushed. A quality result is more important than to apply the spray tan as quickly as possible. The actual application can be done in 5 minutes. Some technicians will do two spray passes versus one, which will take a little longer. An allowance for drying time, 5 to 10 minutes, needs to be added as well. Drying time can be shortened by using direct air from the air hose or with a hair dryer.

HVLP History and Current Application

HVLP technology was first developed for auto painting and has extended its relevant application to woodworking and artistry. In the auto world, the traditional spray gun operated close to 50 psi, a pressure that creates a large amount of overspray along with obvious health and environmental concerns. HVLP technology created a system that used a high volume of air to atomize paint at a very low pressure, less than 10 psi, resulting in significantly less overspray, lower material usage and a safer workplace.

In spray tanning, an airbrush tan uses a significantly lower 15 psi and an HVLP spray tan uses no more than 10 psi. The sunless spray tanning solution is safe, being approved for external application to the skin. One of the appealing traits of HVLP technology for spray tanning is the wider spray pattern of the spray gun. A full size HVLP gun may have as much as an 8-inch spray pattern. A touch up HVLP gun may have a spray pattern near 4 inches. The typical airbrush has no more than a 2-inch pattern. Wider patterns make for quicker application.

If you’re new to spray tanning, you’re probably coming across the concept of spray tan development. But what does spray tan development actually mean? It’s actually quite simple.

Spray tan development is a set number of hours for a spray tan to develop on your body before showering. For example, if a solution recommends 8-12 hours, then it is best to shower any time after 8 hours of the time you received your spray tan. Think of it as a piece of art. You painted a beautiful portrait and it needs time to dry in order for the colors and paint to set. Now in regards to spray tanning, you get sprayed and while the tan is “developing” into a beautiful bronze color, the actual spray needs time to set on your skin.

What Not to Do While Your Spray Tan Is Developing

Even though preparation for a spray tan is extremely important, what not to do during the spray tan development phase can ultimately make or break your spray tan. Here’s a list of reminders on what not to do:

• Don’t let your seatbelt rub across your chest

• Don’t cross your legs

• Limit activity that may cause your body to rub against an object or sweat such as working out

• Washing your hands too long (be mindful)

• Sitting down for too long and having your stomach create lines

• Washing off too early

This might sound like a lot especially if you’re a first-time tanner, but these are the right precautionary steps to take. As long as you’re aware and mindful that the spray tan development phase is important, your tan will more than likely turn out just fine.

Sunburn! Oh No, Will This Affect My Spray Tan?

Did you just get a sunburn, and you’re wondering if it’s ok to get your weekly spray tan? Well, the answer is

most definitely “NO.”

If your sunburn is very painful, or flaking, do not apply anything other than aloe vera or products intended to

treat sunburns. Get the burn to fully heal before you consider getting a spray tan. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for a

sunburn to completely heal. If the sunburn is peeling at all, you don’t want to apply a spray tan. Spray tans

work through an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. DHA reacts with the amino acids of the dead

skin cells sitting on your skin. Since the dead skin cells gradually release from your skin during the constant and

healthy cell renewal process, the fake tan you achieve will also disappear. The spray tan is almost guaranteed to

come off with the flaking skin leaving your tan looking blotchy. The bottom line is, if you have a really bad

sunburn, let it heal before you get a spray tan.

Will A Spray Tan Prevent a Sunburn?

Absolutely not. In fact, no tan whatsoever is going to prevent or even eliminate the possibility of a sunburn. If

you have gotten a good tan from the sun, then it’s like wearing SPF 2 or 3, it might make it slightly harder to get

burned, but not much. Spray tan solutions do not contain any SPF whatsoever. If you are planning to go out

into the sun with a spray tan, be sure you use a good quality sunscreen that is OIL FREE.

It would be a mistake to let these common misconceptions prevent you from seeking out spray tanning as an effective treatment for a natural-looking glow.

Why you should not sunbath

Sunbathing is extremely dangerous, as it impacts the overall health of your skin. Sunbathing outside causes your skin to have optimal exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. On the other hand, sunbathing indoors allows your skin to encounter harmful lamps that emit the same ultraviolet rays as the sun’s natural light.

Whether its indoor or outdoor sunbathing, both bring negative implications such as sunspots, wrinkles, sunburns, and skin cancer. In fact, The Skin Cancer Foundation reported that about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanoma skin cancers are associated with the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

In virtually every TV advertisement, you’ll probably hear the words ”organic” and “natural” used to sell a wide variety of different products. These adjectives are often applied to products to make them appear healthier – including foods and soft drinks. The unfortunate result is that many people now confuse the terms “organic” and “natural” for each other. In reality, natural products aren’t necessarily organic,

and even products advertised as organic could contain a significant amount of unnatural ingredients.

In the United States for example, products that don’t carry a USDA Organic Seal only need to contain 70% organic ingredients in order to advertise themselves as an organic product. The remaining 30% of ingredients don’t even need to be natural – so they may consist of nearly a third synthetic materials. And thanks to confusing regulations in other territories, many products advertised as “organic” could be stretching the truth when it comes to some of their “organic” ingredients.

So what’s the story with organic spray tans? Does this mean spray tans that claim to be organic may not actually be organic at all? While many spray tan solutions carry the words “organic” or “organically certified” on their label, in reality, there’s no such thing. And it’s not a case of companies intentionally misleading their customers, instead, the issue comes from a lack of clarity as to what ingredients can reasonably be called organic.

An example of this is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) – the common ingredient in spray tanning solutions. DHA is primarily derived from sugar beets and sugar cane. A simple carbohydrate, DHA, is currently the only substance that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved to tan the skin and is the most commonly used ingredient in self-tanners and spray tanning products. When used correctly, DHA is a non-toxic way to create a temporary browning effect on your skin. The substance achieves this by reacting with amino acids in the protein keratin of your skin to produce a sun-kissed look. While many spray tan manufacturers consider this naturally-based DHA to be an organic ingredient, others do not.

While Kissed By The Caribbean uses solutions that are EcoCert and Cosmos approved, we felt it was misleading to accurately list these solutions as all organic. And even though the Australian Organic Standard requires only 95% of a product’s ingredients to be organic, we believe anything less than

100% is again misleading.

What should I look for instead of “organic” spray tans? Rather than relying on “organic” labels, certification, or advertising claims, you should look for tanning products that are free from unnatural ingredients like:

Not only will this ensure your glow is as close to organic as possible, you’ll also avoid unwanted side-effects and unnecessary harm to the environment caused by chemicals in many spray tan products.

Keeping your skin hydrated is extremely important with a spray tan. The tan adheres to our skin cells which we shed on a daily basis. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a proven human carcinogen, and there has been plenty of research linking melanoma incidence in young women to tanning bed habits. One study shows just how closely the two are connected: according to researchers, 97% of women diagnosed with melanoma before age 30 have engaged in indoor tanning. Additionally, a woman doesn’t even need to use tanning beds frequently for them to pose a threat to her health. Just one indoor tanning session before the age of 35 increases a person’s risk of melanoma by 75%.

There is no such thing as a healthy UV tan. Whether you’re laying out on the beach or in a tanning bed, the damage your skin sustains can lead to skin aging and potentially deadly skin cancer. It’s so important that young women avoid UV tanning beds and opt for a sun safe beauty routine.

Tanning doesn’t only increase your risk of developing melanoma— it increases your risk of developing other types of skin cancer as well. A single session causes a 67% increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and a 29% increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but BCC and SCC are the two most common forms of cancer.
